JupyterHealth: A platform for interoperability, insight, and innovation in digital health
JupyterHealth is a free, open-source, modular platform that eliminates data silos by integrating real-time data from wearables, IoT devices, mobile apps, and EHRs into a unified, secure, AI-ready ecosystem. The Commons Project is a founding partner.
How it works
JupyterHealth combines a horizontal foundation for data interoperability with vertical solutions for specific clinical and research use cases.
| Data Acquisition | Brings data into the JupyterHealth ecosystem. |
| Data Management | JupyterHealth Exchange securely stores data and exposes it via a standards-based FHIR API. |
| Data Analysis | A specialized JupyterHub provides clinicians and researchers a browser-based notebook environment. |
| EHR Integration | Surfaces analyses and visualizations for participating patients directly in the EHR, via SMART on FHIR. |
Where It's In Use
Programs running on JupyterHealth include:
Diabetes
Hypertension
Heart Failure
Respiratory Health
Metabolic Health (Agile Metabolic Health project, led by UCSF)
Climate & Sleep
Patient Engagement
Clinical Language Bridge
Perioperative Monitoring
Built on Open Principles
Modular: composable components with clear interfaces.
Open: released under a modified-BSD open-source license.
Standards-based: HL7 FHIR, IEEE, Open mHealth.
Secure: OAuth-based authentication, scoped access.
Community-focused: built in the open with clinicians, researchers, developers, and users.
Who's Building It
JupyterHealth is a transdisciplinary effort led by The Commons Project Foundation, UCSF, UC Berkeley (BIDS), Duke University (Big Ideas Lab), Project Jupyter, and 2i2c.
Our Role
Thought leadership on platform ethos, architecture, and interoperability.
Tools in CommonHealth that let users contribute their own data into JupyterHealth-powered programs.
Reference implementations of standards-based services for ingesting wearable and medical device data.
Driving adoption across U.S. health systems and tech vendors.
